A crypto-asset service provider (CASP) license in Slovakia is a mandatory regulatory authorisation that enables legal operation across all EU member states under MiCA.
The National Bank of Slovakia states that MiCA has been fully applied since 30 December 2025 and assesses CASP applications. At SBSB, we offer end-to-end support for obtaining a CASP licence in Slovakia and other EU member states, including Malta, France, or Germany.
What Is a CASP License in Slovakia?
A CASP license in Slovakia is an official regulatory authorisation issued by the National Bank of Slovakia (NBS) that allows legal entities to provide crypto-asset services under the European Union’s Markets in Crypto-Assets (MiCA) framework. As stated in Article 3, paragraph 1 of MiCA, crypto-asset services involve the following:
- providing custody and administration of crypto-assets on behalf of clients;
- operation of a trading platform for crypto-assets;
- exchange of crypto-assets for funds;
- exchange of crypto-assets for other crypto-assets;
- execution of orders for crypto-assets on behalf of clients;
- placing of crypto-assets;
- receiving and transmitting orders for crypto-assets on behalf of clients;
- providing advice on crypto-assets;
- providing portfolio management on crypto-assets;
- providing transfer services for crypto-assets on behalf of clients
The MiCA CASP authorisation replaced the previous Slovak national regime under which certain crypto-asset activities were carried out based on a regulated trade (trade licence). Slovakia provided a relatively smooth transition to MiCA by allowing existing crypto-asset service providers to continue operating under the previous regime for a 12-month transitional period, until 30 December 2025. Those who want to continue their activities after the transitional period have to apply for a MiCA licence.
How Is Cryptocurrency Regulated in Slovakia?
As an EU member state, Slovakia regulates crypto-assets primarily under MiCA and Act No. 248/2024 Coll., implementing the MiCA framework. Depending on the type of crypto-asset and the activities involved, additional EU legislation may also apply, such as the DLT Regulation, the TFR, DAC8, and some other legal acts.
In the country, the national competent authority responsible for authorisation and supervision of most crypto-asset activities is the National Bank of Slovakia. It conducts pre-application communications, grants CASP licences, and supervises service providers after authorisation.
What Are the Benefits of Getting a Crypto License in Slovakia?
The NBS insists that obtaining a CASP license in Slovakia is not faster or easier than in other EU member states. Slovakia applies the MiCA requirements in the same way as other EU jurisdictions.
However, applicants can benefit from pre-licensing meetings that take place in person at the NBS. A business can get feedback on how to improve the application’s compliance. Though this is not a consultation, the review can be shortened.
What Are the Advantages of a CASP License in Slovakia?
Getting a crypto license in Slovakia offers regulatory certainty, EU-wide market access, and modest official licensing fees. The Slovak regime does not impose a general local-ownership requirement, allowing foreign investors to hold 100% of a Slovak CASP.
Additionally, general business costs such as local rent, administrative costs, and employee salaries are relatively low compared with most EU financial hubs.
What Are the Requirements for Obtaining a CASP License in Slovakia?
To obtain a CASP license in Slovakia, a service provider must establish a local company with a general corporate-law minimum of 5,000 EUR. A CASP license requires different capital thresholds, depending on the scope of services offered under the CASP license.
Members of the management body must have the necessary good repute, knowledge, skills, experience, and sufficient time commitment, etc. NBS examines the applicant’s actual management, economic activity, and substance in Slovakia. The CASP must comply with AML/CFT requirements, and KYC is one component of those obligations.
An applicant is expected to prepare a package of documents that includes the following:
- a formal application;
- corporate and statutory documents;
- information on the management body;
- sources of own funds and financing;
- governance and organisational structure;
- a three-year business plan with different market scenarios;
- AML/CFT internal policies and risk management strategy;
- documents describing IT systems and security measures.
The above list can be expanded in accordance with the NBS application checklist.
What Are the Capital and AML/KYC Requirements for CASPs in Slovakia?
Under Slovakia’s AML Act, CASPs must comply with strict AML and KYC rules and identify and verify customers. This includes an individual’s name, residence/address, and nationality, and verifying identity against an identity document. If a customer is a corporate client, the CASP must identify the legal entity, the person acting on its behalf, and its beneficial owner(s), and verify the relevant information. NBS requires a service provider to report unusual business operations to the Financial Intelligence Unit as part of the AML framework applicable to CASPs.
Depending on the scope of crypto-asset services, the applicable minimum initial capital is EUR 50,000, EUR 125,000 or EUR 150,000.
How Does the CASP Licensing Process Work in Slovakia?
The overall duration of a CASP licensing procedure depends on the completeness of the application. The statutory “clean” process takes about 4 months. However, the realistic total licensing period is roughly 5–8 months. The review starts only after NBS has received a complete application. Otherwise, the regulator can request additional information.
What Are the Steps to Apply for a CASP License in Slovakia?
We’ll support our clients throughout all the stages of obtaining a CASP license in Slovakia. The business should take the following steps:
- Incorporate a joint-stock company, limited liability company, simple joint stock company, or European company (Societas Europaea) and appoint a director.
- Arrange a pre-application meeting at the NBS to get informal guidance on documentation.
- Prepare a package of documents and submit it to the NBS.
- Communicate with the regulator while it reviews the file.
- License issued. Once the application is reviewed, the regulator grants the authorisation.
The NBS issues a formal written decision granting or refusing the CASP authorisation. The date of delivery is considered the date of notification.
How Is a CASP Company Incorporated in Slovakia?
In Slovakia, the company establishment procedures can be carried out through electronic systems. The process includes the following steps:
- Choosing the company name.
- Registering an office in Slovakia.
- Appointing a director and managers.
- Preparing the founding documents (the memorandum of association if founded by two or more members).
- Paying at least the minimum registered capital (EUR 5,000 for an s.r.o.)
- Obtaining a business authorisation to perform activities listed in the memorandum of association.
- Preparing documents and submitting them for registration of the company in the Commercial Register.
In 2026, tax registration is generally automatic for a Slovak legal entity registered in the Commercial Register. But VAT registration is not automatically performed.
How Does the CASP Application Submission Work?
In Slovakia, the NBS’s current CASP guidance states that the application is submitted in paper form. Generally, originals or officially certified copies are sent to the NBS address in Bratislava.
After submitting the paper application and paying the fee, the applicant can also deliver the application electronically to facilitate the procedure. But the electronic copy does not replace the required paper submission.
How Does the Review Process Work?
The review process is accurate and smooth. First, NBS checks the submitted file for up to 25 working days. Once it receives a complete application, the regulator starts the substantive assessment, which takes up to 40 working days. Otherwise, it can request additional information after the checks. Also, the assessment period can be suspended for up to 20 working days.
What Happens After CASP License Approval in Slovakia?
In Slovakia, once a CASP license is granted, a service provider can immediately provide the crypto-asset services covered by its license. It must maintain the required funds, comply with MiCA and AML/CFT requirements and submit regular reports to the NBS.
What Is the Tax Regime for Crypto Businesses in Slovakia?
The Slovak company is generally taxed under the ordinary corporate tax rules. The standard corporate tax rates depend on taxable revenue. In 2026, they are as follows:
- 10% for companies whose taxable revenues do not exceed EUR 100,000;
- 21% for companies with taxable revenues between EUR 100,000 and EUR 5 million;
- and 24% for companies whose taxable revenues exceed EUR 5 million.
From 1 January 2026, Slovak legal entities may also be subject to the financial transaction tax on transactions specified in the Slovak Financial Transaction Tax Act.
